Inspired by the ancient
Celtic Oral Tradition, the Bard’s Chair is an interpretation of the beauty and humor that distinguishes Irish culture. Unfortunately, due to the ravages of time, weather and foreign invaders, little ancient Celtic furniture has survived. But by incorporating carved designs from the
Book of Kells, Irish Furniture has intuitively re-created a one thousand year-old piece.
Combining function and ornament, the hardwood Bard’s Chair is striking in a rich medium mahogany with carvings in subdued colors: red, blue, green, white, and yellow. The Chair is mildly distressed and darkened in the crevices and some edges, to show aging.
The shape of the legs is inherently Celtic in their lack of symmetry, inspired by the letter A as drawn in the
Book of Kells. Intricate carvings, drawn from the weaves and zoomorphic designs in
Book of Kells, adorn the stool’s back and legs.
The most unique feature of the stool is the whimsical shelf. Available on either the right or left side of the Bard’s Chair, and perfect rest for a sheet of music (or pint of stout!), the shelf is a typically Irish quirk not found on French, Italian or English furniture.
